Does one not freeze in such low
temperatures? The exposure time is so short
that the skin does not
freeze. The perception of cold reaches the brain via the central
nervous system and launches the therapeutic reaction. In addition, the most
sensitive areas of the body are covered during the session.
How does cryotherapy feel
compared to winter swimming? In cryotherapy the
skin is exposed to extremely low temperatures, but the water
temperature is always above zero. The feeling of 'wet' cold is,
however, much rougher on the
skin. Cryotherapy is softer and easier to tolerate starting from the first
session. The neurological stimulus is, however, much stronger.
Fear is a factor which everyone has to overcome, but after the
initial try, one realizes it is not too bad after all.
What side-effects might cryotherapy have? During the years of practise with cryotherapy
we have noticed how its
favourable effects have astonished both clients and professionals. Cryotherapy
suits almost everyone. Only a few (5 out of 1000) get cold-allergic symptoms
(red blotches) in the beginning of the treatment but these normally disappear by themselves.
Heavy smokers may get slight headache.
For whom is cryotherapy not recommended?
Cryotherapy is suitable neither after heart operations nor
strokes nor for patients who have a pace-maker or an artificial heart valve.
Before starting the treatment, the doctor in charge should always be consulted. Cf.
with
contraindications on 'paramedical' page.
